August 2017, Phil Rizzo funneled $900,000 through his church to facilitate the sale of his house. Along with a $750,000 mortgage, Rizzo transferred his house to his church to avoid $20,376 in property taxes. Claiming his church was unable to provide him a salary, “Instead, the church decided to purchase my home as an asset and allow my family and I to continue living there,” he said.
The only two signatures on the mortgage are Philip Rizzo, and Seth Essendrop the church's treasurer and only other listed employee.

In June 2021, Rizzo explained "I'm on a leave of absence right now, and it may be something that turns permanent, and maybe I go back but right now a lot of doors have opened to me."
Rizzo's church, City Baptist, closed after hurricane Ida made landfall in September 2021. The City Baptist Church website states "Due to sustained damage from Hurricane Ida, we are no longer able to meet in our Kennedy Boulevard location."
Rizzo, the retired pastor of closed church, but still lives property tax free. So who is paying the mortgage?
